What are NFTs?

NFT stands for Non-Fungible Token. NFTs are digital assets that reflect ownership of tangible and intangible items. Let’s break it down into 2 principle notions.

Non-Fungible — These tokens are not interchangeable and each token is distinguishable from the other. Token — These tokens are issued on a blockchain, often on the Ethereum blockchain.

Therefore, NFTs are unique tokens in limited quantities and backed by a network of cryptocurrencies.

What are some characteristics of NFTs?

1. Indivisible
NFTs cannot be divided into smaller denominations like bitcoin. They exist exclusively as a whole item. i.e., One NFT represents one painting

2. Indestructible
Because all NFT data is stored on the blockchain via smart contracts, tokens cannot be destroyed, removed, or replicated. Ownership of these tokens is also immutable, which means gamers and collectors actually possess their NFTs, as opposed to the entities that create them.

3. Verifiable
Storing historical ownership data on the blockchain for items such as digital artwork creates an audit trail back to the original creator, allowing pieces to be authenticated without the need for third-party verification.

Why would I want to own NFTs?

One significant advantage of owning NFT over a physical collectible is that each NFT is distinguishable from other NFTs. Each NFT carries unique information that can be traced back to the original issuer, preventing fabrication and circulation of false collectibles in its tracks.

Almost every generative collection has its rarity and that is what makes the initial launch exciting. Rarity in NFTs also evokes emotions of joy and pride that comes with owning an asset that is special. Think a sleek pair of Nike sneakers — no one buys it because they need it. They buy it for the way it makes them feel. The same is true for a GIF, image or other digital asset.

Being able to join an amazing community can act as a huge utility — genuine and sincere interaction formed with like-minded people.

How do I buy one?

Follow these few steps:

1. Purchase some crypto on an exchange. The most frequently used is Ethereum.

2. Transfer your crypto to a crypto wallet. The most commonly used is Metamask.

3. Connect your wallet to an NFT marketplace. The most popular one is OpenSea.

Now you are ready to browse and buy!

Can’t I just right click and save an image?

Yes, you can. But you will not have the rights to it. Conversely, NFT ownership is recorded on the decentralised blockchain ledger, which involves a whole network of computers reading and approving transactions and data.

How do you know if your NFT is authentic?

NFT ownership is recorded on the decentralised blockchain ledger —  where everyone can verify something they own.

What are some use cases of NFTs?
Sports

Famous athletes are using NFT to earn more income from their image. NBA player Spencer Dinwiddie tokenised his contract so that others could invest in him.

Art

Non-fungible tokens have opened up new possibilities for digital art, which can now be considered as part of a collection, as an investment or as a commodity to be traded as its originality and value are assured. It has also enabled digital artists to sell their images, animations or videos by connecting directly with collectors, thereby increasing the income from their work.
